Interviewing tips!

The job interview is probably the most important step you will take in your job search journey - it’s your best chance to show the person interviewing you that you’re the best person for the job.

DO YOUR RESEARCH

Get inquisitive and find out as much as you can about the company. Website, LinkedIn, Annual Reports, and google the company name. Your effort will show in the job interview, and you’ll be seen as proactive, prepared and have relevant questions to ask them.

DRESS FOR THE ROLE, LOCATION AND INDUSTRY SECTOR

Many companies have a corporate casual dress code however check with your contact to confirm what is appropriate. The role, location of work and industry sector are important considerations and remember it’s an interview and first impressions count.

PUNCTUALITY & SETUP

Punctuality is a subtle clue about attitude and behaviour. Tardiness, no matter what the excuse is, is a major no no. Be 10 minutes early if in person and have tested your equipment if attending a virtual interview on Teams or Zoom. Have a glass of water by your side.

VIDEO INTERVIEWS

Video Interviews are the norm today and ensuring you do this from a PC or IPAD is better than a mobile phone. Ensure your equipment is at eye level, you have light behind your camera (not behind you) and have a clean and uncluttered space behind you so there are no distractions.

BE THE BEST VERSION OF YOU

Valuing your career achievements is displayed with self-confidence and articulating what you are proud of demonstrates and the value you bring to your potential new employer. Being the best version of yourself with a positive mindset is what counts.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT!

Practice your responses to a range of questions, such as "tell me about yourself" and "provide an example of when you…" How well you speak will have a bigger impact than what you say.

BE PRESENT

The most effective job interviews are those where conversation flows freely, and it takes active listening and questions from you too. It is okay to ask questions that are relevant to the conversation you are having with your interviewer.

COMMUNICAITON IS KEY

Communication is the key to a successful interview and listening carefully is a big part of communicating effectively. Remember to be you, answer questions honestly and to the point and bring the professional YOU.

PROVIDE EXAMPLES

Support statements about yourself with specific examples. These allow the interviewer to understand your intentions and how you have dealt with various scenarios. If you have KPI’s or metrics that support your examples in a work situation this is even better.

BE POSITIVE ABOUT CO-WORKERS

Bad mouthing previous companies, employers or co-workers is a NO NO! No matter how well founded, this implies a negative attitude, typical of those who don’t take personal accountability to navigate difficult situations.

REMAIN ATTENTIVE

Get a good night sleep the night before! Stay alert during the job interview.

Maintain good eye contact. Sit forward in your chair. Show high levels of interest and stay enthused. These actions can maintain or generate momentum during the interview.

ASK QUESTIONS

Prepare 3 key questions that will demonstrate your genuine interest in the company, motivation, intelligence, and skills. Have these prepared from your research. Avoid small talk

.

IF THIS IS RIGHT FOR YOU – TELL THEM!

By the conclusion of the interview, state that your interested in the position and that you would like to know when the next step will take place. And of course manners never go out of style. Thank the interviewer for their time and let them know you enjoyed meeting them.
